INTERVENTION GUIDELINES

When faced with challenging problems such as how teachers and schools can best serve students with mood disorders, savvy school counselors turn to the professional literature for guidance. Unfortunately, little research has been conducted on effective school-based interventions for mood disorders, particularly interventions that can be implemented by classroom teachers to assist individual students. The broader literature on childhood depression and clinic-based treatment of mood disorders, however, provides some guidance in shaping interventions. In the remainder of this chapter, a set of intervention guidelines will be presented. These guidelines are extrapolated from current research findings so as to anchor them on the firmest possible empirical ground. Where possible, the guidelines are supplemented with examples of how they can be used to generate specific strategies for individual and group settings as well as classroom settings.
